Ogham (pronounced ‘oh-am’) is an ancient Irish script dating back to the 1st century BC. Its oldest surviving examples are stone carvings from the 4th century, but Ogham was also commonly used on wood for messages and records. These inscriptions were often portable, sometimes cryptic, and believed by some to hold magical significance.
