Bangle Guide

The word ‘Bangle’ came from the Hindi word ‘bangri’, which means ring-shaped armlet and dated from 2600 BC when bangles were traditionally made from materials such as bronze, terracotta, seashells and copper.

Round Bangles

Round bangles are made like a wedding ring, from gold or silver wire, with no break or gap. These bangles must be larger than the wrist to slide over Round bangles are crafted from gold or silver wire in a continuous loop, resembling a wedding ring, without any breaks or gaps. These bangles must be larger than the wrist to easily slide over the hand, and a snug fit over the wrist is recommended for comfort while wearing.

Round bangles come in various profiles, including round, oval, and rectangular shapes, as well as different widths and thicknesses. The round cross-section is particularly suitable for adding charms. All Faller round bangles are made from solid wire. The thicker solid silver bangles are typically worn individually, while the thinner styles can be stacked and worn together.

Narrow round bangles are often referred to as slave bangles. Historically, these bangles served as a form of currency in slave trading; the higher the value of a slave, the more slave bangles were exchanged. Additionally, free women wore these silver and gold bangles to symbolize their husband’s wealth. They can be worn on either the wrist or the upper arm.

Torc Bangles

Torc bangles, also known as torque or torque bangles, are oval in shape with an opening on one side that allows them to be easily slipped onto the wrist. This design provides a neater and more comfortable fit compared to round bangles.

Like round bangles, torc bangles can be crafted in various profiles, such as round, oval, or rectangular, and come in different widths and thicknesses in either silver or gold. They can be made from solid or hollow wire; however, hollow versions are more prone to kinking. All Faller round bangles are crafted from solid wire. Solid silver torcs are gaining popularity, especially among men, making them an excellent choice for men’s jewelry gifts.

Torcs are typically worn individually, as they are not suitable for adding charms. However, many design variations are possible, with added details either at the open ends or the solid side. Celtic torc bangles are particularly favored.

Though widely worn by ancient Egyptians, torcs are most commonly associated with the Celts and Vikings. In these cultures, torcs for both the wrist and neck, made of bronze and gold, were popular symbols of wealth and prestige. The word “torc” or “torque” originates from Latin, meaning to twist or turn something. Historically, torc wire was twisted along its length to harden the gold before the invention of modern alloys. After twisting, it was then shaped into the oval bangle form. In thinner torcs, smaller openings were more common, requiring the bangle to be twisted apart for wear. The twisting process allowed the bangle to spring back when released. Today, modern alloys make silver and gold harder, eliminating the need for twisting, which allows for a broader range of torc styles.

Cuff Bangles

Cuff bangles are oval-shaped with an opening that allows them to be slipped over the wrist, similar to torc bangles. However, cuff bangles are typically wider and are made from flattened and shaped gold or silver. Occasionally, they may also incorporate combinations of metal with leather or woven, decorated fabric. The open ends of cuff bangles are usually curved to facilitate easier wearing.

Like torcs, cuff bangles are generally worn individually. They come in a wide range of design options, featuring intricate surface patterns or polished and textured finishes. Both modern contemporary bangles and traditional Celtic bangles have their own unique appeal.

In ancient Egypt, gold or copper cuff bangles were commonly worn by both men and women. The Egyptians valued personal adornment highly, believing it pleased their gods. Similarly, gold or iron cuff bangles were also popular among the Vikings and Celts.

Bracelets

Unlike rigid bangles, bracelets are flexible and crafted from silver or gold links, featuring a catch that allows the wearer to easily put them on and take them off. Over time, the metal links can wear down where they rub against each other. It’s important to check these points periodically, as a broken link could result in the loss of a treasured bracelet. Additionally, wearing a bracelet too loosely can increase wear and tear.

Bracelets can be worn alone, creating a simple yet elegant look. Chunky silver bracelets and beaded bracelets are ideal for everyday wear, while delicate chain bracelets and stone-set bracelets are better suited for parties or formal evening occasions.

The history of bracelets dates back to 5000 BC in Egypt, where they were made from materials such as thread, wire, leather, and beads.
