    About The Miraculous Medal

The Miraculous Medal is inspired by the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary as seen by Saint Catherine Labouré in Rue du Bac, Paris, France.

On the 27th of November 1830, Catherine reported that during evening meditations the Blessed Mother appeared within an oval frame, standing upon a globe. She wore many gem set rings that shone rays of light which she told Catherine, “… symbolise the graces I shed upon those who ask for them.” Around the margin of the frame appeared the words: Ô Marie, conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous (O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee). The frame appeared to rotate, showing a circle of twelve stars, a large letter M surmounted by a cross, above the Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns and the Heart of Mary pierced with a sword. Sister Catherine then heard the Virgin Mary ask her to take these images to her father confessor and tell him they should be put on medallions, saying “All who wear them will receive great graces.”

The original medal was made by goldsmith Adrien Vachette. The Miraculous Medal is often worn by Catholics to strengthen their faith. It is also worn by other Christians with reverence for the Blessed Mother.
