Sapphire Guide

Sapphire is the September birthstone, the gem for the zodiac sign Virgo and is linked with the 5th,  45th and 65th wedding anniversaries.

Sapphire has traditionally symbolized nobility, truth, sincerity and faithfulness and has become the most popular anniversary gemstone. Ancient Greek and Roman royalty believed the gem protected them from harm. In the Middle Ages, the clergy thought blue sapphire symbolized heaven and the faithful thought it attracted blessings. While most commonly thought of as blue, sapphire actually occurs in a wide range of colours, including pink, purple, orange, yellow, green and brown. (Sapphire is every colour of the mineral corundum except for red, which is ruby.) Yellow Sapphire is also an alternate 9th anniversary gemstone.
