About Moonstone
Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar group mineral orthoclase. Moonstone’s shimmering glow is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar. This phenomenon is called adularescence. The cabochon cut is the best cut to display this affect. Moonstone is fairly soft (6-6.5 on the Mohs scale).
Moonstones come in a variety of colours. The body colour can range from colourless to gray, brown, pink, yellow, or green. The clarity ranges from transparent to translucent. The best moonstone has a blue sheen, perfect clarity, and a colourless body colour.
Moonstone is found in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Madagascar, Brazil, Australia and India. Coloured moonstone only comes from India. Rainbow moonstone is mined in the southwest of India and blue is mined at Bihar in the centre of the country.
