Spiritual & Health Benefits
Bloodstone is an ancient gem material that was used by the Babylonians (pre-539 BC) to make amulets and talismans with healing properties. The Ancient Egyptians believed bloodstone could make an individual stronger and more stealthy in battle, maybe even invisible to their enemies.
Bloodstone was typically fashioned into amulets and carved with a family’s coat of arms or crest. These bloodstone intaglios could then be placed in signet rings and used as melted wax seals.
Bloodstone is believed to enhance the immune system, helping the body fight against infections and diseases. This gemstone is known for its ability to help calm and stabilize emotions. It can promote self-confidence, reduce stress, and bring about a sense of inner peace.
Throughout history, bloodstone has been connected with an ability to control the weather, predict the future, win courtroom battles and increase creativity.

Physical Characteristics
Bloodstone is a type of polycrystalline chalcedony – that means it is composed of tiny quartz crystals that cannot be seen with an unaided eye.
This opaque stone comes in many shapes and cuts, including traditional cuts like emerald, oval, and cushion.
Like other types of chalcedony, it has a hardness of 6 -7 on the Mohs scale. With its lack of cleavage, good durability and wide availability, it is a popular and affordable gem.
Having no standard shape, bloodstone is usually cut into cabochons and beads, where it is mostly used in bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and rings. It is very popular in signet rings and cameos. Carvings, small cups and statues have also been cut from it.

Bloodstone Care
Bloodstone has good toughness, but can be chipped or scratched if struck, so remove before engaging in sports etc. You should also remove your bloodstone jewellery before using household cleaning solutions that may contain harsh chemicals.
Bloodstone can be scratched by harder gems such as sapphire and spinel, so always store your gemstone jewellery separately.
Being relatively durable, bloodstone is easy to care for. Use warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean your bloodstone jewellery. Be sure to rinse well to remove all soapy residue.
